Devil Got Him Into a Hell of a Jam

The devil made him do it.

That, at least, is what Brea police said Robert Sandstrom, 42, of Anaheim told them after he allegedly tried to run down Sgt. William Vukelich with his 1986 Toyota pickup truck.

Police said Sandstrom, pulled over for a traffic violation near Brea and State College boulevards at 10:54 p.m. Friday, tried to ram Vukelich moments after the officer stepped out of his patrol car.

Sandstrom then led Vukelich and several other officers in patrol cars on a 20-mile chase that took them on the Orange, Riverside, Santa Ana and Costa Mesa freeways, police said.

Sandstrom was taken into custody after he collided with a police car in the 14000 block of Chambers Road in Tustin, police said, adding that there were no injuries.

Police said Sandstrom told them that he was “talking to Satan” when he attempted to run over Vukelich. He was booked on charges of reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon and held in Orange County Jail. Bail was set at $25,000.
