Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), contending that published reports have outlined “clear violations of House rules” by Speaker Jim Wright (D-Tex.), says he intends to ask the House ethics committee next month to launch a formal investigation. Gingrich said two specific published reports about Wright provide clear evidence that he violated House rules. One involved Wright’s alleged failure since 1980 to file the required financial disclosure reports for a company in which he is a partner. The other involved 55% royalties Wright received for a book published by a friend whose printing company worked for Wright’s campaign committee. Gingrich said the ethics panel also should investigate Wright’s connection to Texas savings and loan association officials who are under investigation by federal authorities.
