Pacific 10 : Oregon State Takes Over Second Place, 69-57

Bill Sherwood scored 24 points, and Oregon State took sole possession of second place in the Pacific 10 Conference with a 69-57 victory over Washington at Corvallis, Ore.

Oregon State (15-8, 9-5) outscored the Huskies, 13-3, in the final 2 1/2 minutes.

Washington (7-17, 3-11) led by 14 points midway through the first half and was ahead by nine early in the second half.

The Beavers failed to score a field goal in the first six minutes of the game and the first five minutes after intermission.

But their pressure defense kept them in the game by forcing Washington into 27 turnovers, including five apiece for each of the Husky starters.

Oregon State went on a 14-5 run to tie the Huskies, 34-34, at halftime on Gary Payton’s three-pointer with 21 seconds left.

Washington outscored the Beavers, 10-1, to start the second half to take a 44-35 lead, but the Beavers came back and took the lead for good, 52-50, on Earl Martin’s basket with 7:49 left.

Eldridge Recasner scored 21 points for Washington.
