Ex-State Sen. Stiern Dies at 73
Former state Sen. Walter Stiern (D-Bakersfield), who stepped down as dean of the 40-member Senate in 1986, died at the home of a family friend, it was reported today. He was 73.
Stiern had driven to Davis from Bakersfield Sunday, Deputy William Long of the Yolo County coroner’s office said. He died Sunday afternoon at the friend’s home. Long said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Stiern served in the California Senate 28 years. A conservative, he represented the 16th Senate District, which includes parts of Kern, Kings, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
