Newport Corp., a Fountain Valley-based manufacturer of laser equipment, reported that net income for the second quarter ended Jan. 31 increased 49%, to $1.5 million compared to $1 million for the corresponding 1987 quarter. Sales rose 17% to $11.9 million from $10.1 million a year ago. For the six-month period, earnings increased 33%, to $3.1 million, compared to $2.3 million for the 1987 period. Sales increased 17% to $24.8 million from $21.2 million.
