The World : 3 Held in Marine Kidnap

Three men involved in the kidnaping of U.S. Marine Lt. Col. William R. Higgins have been arrested in Lebanon, local security officials and independent military observers said. But the officials gave no encouragement that the capture of the suspects might lead to the officer’s release. Daoud Daoud, commander of the mainstream Shia Muslim militia Amal, confirmed that two participants in the abduction, as well as a courier, were seized last week. Other security sources, meanwhile, said they suspected Higgins was being held in a village about 15 miles northeast of Tyre. But gunmen from an opposing militia, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah (Party of God) reportedly prevented Amal backers from approaching.
