College Baseball : Garcia Pitches Shutout for Fullerton

Longo Garcia pitched a six-hitter to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 2-0 victory over Pepperdine Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game at Fullerton.

It was the second consecutive shutout for Garcia (4-1), a senior right-hander from Orange Coast College. He had five strikeouts and four walks and was helped by four double plays.

Greg Mannion hit a home run, his third, in the first for Fullerton (8-6). Mannion doubled to left-center in the third and scored on a single by Mark Razook.

In other nonconference games:

Loyola Marymount 9, UC Irvine 7--Travis Tarchione went 4 for 4 with two doubles to lead Loyola at home. Loyola (13-2) was leading, 8-6, in the eighth inning, when Irvine loaded the bases with two outs. Irvine’s Marcus Robinson struck out swinging, but the ball got by Loyola catcher Mia Bradbury, allowing Robinson to take first and Gordon Staab to score. That made it 8-7, but John Seeburger, who went 2 for 4, struck out.

Jeff Oberdank was 3 for 4 with a triple and scored three runs for Irvine (7-9-1). Oberdank has scored 21 runs in 17 games. Loyola, ranked No. 7 in the nation, has won 11 straight.

UCLA 10, Chapman 4--Catcher John Dolak hit two home runs to lead the 16th-ranked Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Dolak hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and a bases-empty homer in the seventh, giving him four for the year. Charlie Fiacco hit his sixth home run in the first inning.

David Bird (1-1) took the loss; UCLA starter John Sutherland (3-2), the first of four Bruin pitchers, got the win.

UCLA is 10-5. Chapman is 6-7-1.
