Manila, Wide Areas of Luzon Hit by Quake
A strong earthquake shook Manila and wide areas of the Philippines’ main island of Luzon on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The Philippine Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology measured the tremor at 5.3 on the Richter scale, but the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo., rated it 6.9.
The epicenter was off the coast of the island of Cantanduanes, 245 miles southeast of Manila.
The earthquake shook tall buildings in Manila, but officials said they were not aware of any damage.
