Fishing Notebook : Barrel Reefs May Be a Sure Bet to Improve Sportfishing

Share

The future of sportfishing has been improved by man-made reefs placed on sandy ocean bottoms.

Anglers who fish the reefs along the South Bay have proved the artificial habitats attract many species of fish.

A new concept in reef habitat development is an experimental barrel with rocks and holes that attract small fish. Larger fish eventually are attracted to the reefs.

Russ Izor, a pioneer in reef development, loaded his boat, the First String, with the barrels and unloaded them in a sandy area 7 1/2 miles out of San Pedro.

Izor said the barrels will be checked by divers who will report to biologists from the state Fish and Game Department.
