$14.7-Million Repaving of 101 Gets Final OK

The California Transportation Commission on Friday gave final approval to a $14.7-million resurfacing of the Ventura Freeway from Calabasas to Thousand Oaks.

The project, one of four scheduled for the Ventura Freeway over the next five years, involves adding five inches of asphalt to concrete along a nine-mile stretch, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said.

Concrete between Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas and Hampshire Road in Thousand Oaks has begun breaking up because rocks with an unusually high acid content were used when the section was paved nearly 20 years ago, Caltrans says.

The commission, which controls highway and transit spending in the state, had previously approved the resurfacing. It gave final approval Friday at a meeting in San Rafael.

Caltrans officials said that, in response to petitions from local elected officials, all of the project’s resurfacing will be done between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The freeway’s width will remain at four lanes each way. Work is scheduled to begin in May or June and be completed early next year.
