Gloria Hollister Anable; Explorer, Conservationist
Gloria Hollister Anable, 87, who set a women’s world record for ocean descent in 1931 when she dived in a bathysphere to a depth of 410 feet off Bermuda. An explorer and conservationist, Miss Hollister became a celebrity after her dive, coming as it did when women were just entering the world of discovery. She also explored the world of zoology with William Beebe, the oceanographer who was her mentor. In Fairfield, Conn., on Feb. 19.
