CAMPAIGN ’88 : Connally Endorses Dole ‘For What It’s Worth’
Former Texas Gov. John B. Connally on Friday endorsed Kansas Sen. Bob Dole for President.
Connally’s recent auctioning of his wordly possessions was the humiliation of a lifetime and his 1980 presidential campaign was ridiculed for producing only a single delegate, so his endorsement may not be the most important announcement of this year’s Republican race.
But Dole nevertheless rushed off to Houston when Connally called and happily accepted the endorsement. Houston is where Vice President George Bush calls home.
Connally, trying to climb back out of financial bankruptcy, was self-effacing, saying he offered his support “for what it’s worth.”
It was worth a Page 1 headline in a Houston newspaper, a hometown tweak at Bush that had Dole and his staff grinning.
Connally said: “I’ve watched him for over a quarter of a century, and I don’t find Bob Dole lacking in very many things.”
