Genz Goal Lifts USIU Past Anchorage

Tom Genz scored the game-winning goal in the third period to lead United States International University to a 3-2 victory over Alaska-Anchorage in a hockey game at the San Diego Ice Arena Friday night.

The Gulls (18-12) need a sweep of Anchorage (18-12-3) to have a shot at the independent berth in the NCAA tournament. The teams play again tonight at 7:30.

USIU led, 2-0, on goals by Jim Hau and Peter Stensgard. Mike Mullis and Mike Hiltner scored for Anchorage to tie it in the second period.

USIU scored the game winner with 10:32 left in the third period when Genz scored on a deflected shot by Gary Woolford.

BASEBALL

San Diego State, meeting Florida for the first time, lost Coach Jim Dietz in the second inning, assistant Gary Brown in the seventh and, finally, the game, 12-2, Friday in Davenport, Fla.

Dietz was ejected after bumping into the home plate umpire while protesting a balk call against Rob Brown (1-2). Gary Brown also was ejected for arguing.

Florida (9-4) scored seven runs in the fifth--three coming on a four-base error with two outs--for a 9-1 lead. Jeff Mendez hit a two-run home run in the Gators’ sixth.

For SDSU (8-5), freshman catcher Eric Christopher had a single and a double and relief pitcher Jim Gibbs struck out the six batters he faced.

The teams meet again today and Sunday.

TENNIS

Grossmont College women’s tennis team, ranked second in the state, defeated Santa Barbara City College, 9-0, Friday in Santa Barbara. Grossmont (5-0) meets Ventura College today.

GOLF

United States International University stands 7th and San Diego State 12th after the opening round of the 54-hole, 15-team Patty Sheehan Golf Invitational at Ft. Ord Golf Course in Monterey.

Tulsa is first with a 301. Three strokes back are Texas and Duke. USIU shot 311, SDSU 320.

Dana Lofland of San Jose State shot a 1-under 71 to lead USC’s Tracy Nakamura by one stroke. Susan Shapcott of USIU shot a 75 and is in 9th; teammates Allison Shapcott and Tupito Walker each shot 78 and are in 25th. Michelle Paden of SDSU had a 77, putting her at 20th, and teammate Karen Engberg shot an 80 for 41st among the 77 golfers.

USIU’s men’s team finished 24th in the 26-team John Burns Invitational in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Oklahoma won the team title with an 853 and Arkansas was second at 861.

USIU finished at 923 in the 54-hole tournament.

Chris Little of Arkansas won the individual title on the third playoff hole over Carl Senneson of Oklahoma State and James Kim of USC. The leaders tied at 6-under 210. USIU was led by Tom Copeland’s 225.

VOLLEYBALL

Ken Blackman had 21 kills for UC San Diego as the 17th-ranked Tritons defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 15-8, 15-13, 15-5, in San Bernardino.

Paul Miller added 15 kills and John Lee had 45 assists for UCSD (5-11).

BASKETBALL

Shannon Anderson scored 18 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 71-55 victory over UC San Diego in a nonconference game at La Jolla.

The victory gave Point Loma Nazarene (20-9) its first 20-victory season in history. The Crusaders led, 33-24, at the half and shot 57% from the field. UCSD shot 28%.

Tracy Ragatz and Nadirah Scott scored 14 points apiece for UCSD (11-14), which concluded its season.
