Prisoner Found Hanged in Jail Cell
An inmate was found hanged Saturday at the County Jail downtown.
Javier Torres Garcia, 34, apparently fashioned a rope from his bedding while other inmates slept and hanged himself from the cell bars, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Suzanne Hatcher. He was discovered at 1:30 a.m. during a routine security check.
Deputies administered first aid to Garcia, who had no pulse. He was pronounced dead at UC San Diego Medical Center an hour later.
Garcia, a San Diego resident, was arrested Feb. 20 by Chula Vista police on a warrant for three counts of contempt of court, according to Lt. Bill Flores, the jail watch commander. “We didn’t have any knowledge of any severe psychological problems or anything like that,” Flores said.
