A Laney College administrator has resigned amid allegations that he was involved in a scheme to falsify documents so that students at the Oakland school could fraudulently apply for more than $100,000 in government grants and loans, according to a published report. John B. Greene, 47, stepped down from his $46,000-a-year job, The Oakland Tribune reported. Greg Gollihur of the California Student Aid Commission said several dozen Laney students were involved, but no penalties will be sought against them. Gollihur said documents were forged to make students appear financially independent of their parents, giving them far lower incomes, which helped them qualify for aid. Several years ago, Greene was president of Merritt College in Oakland, but resigned after his 1982 arrest for trying to buy stolen business suits.
