Conductor Kenneth Schermerhorn has announced he will not renew his contract as music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic in order to devote more time to the financially threatened Nashville Symphony Orchestra, which was forced to cancel its season earlier this month. “The Nashville Symphony has been undergoing major financial problems which now threaten the orchestra’s future,” Schermerhorn said. Schermerhorn, also Music Director of the Nashville orchestra, adding he had reached his decision “only after a great deal of thought and with considerable regret.” He has been associated with the Hong Kong orchestra since 1980, first as guest conductor and since 1984 as Music Director.
