The number of U.S. college students taking courses for credit in foreign countries has nearly doubled in three years, according to a new survey. In 1985-86, 48,483 students attending 1,898 U.S institutions earned academic credit for studies outside the United States, according to latest figures from the Institute for International Education, the nation’s largest higher education exchange agency. The most recent previous study, conducted in 1982-83 by the agency, found 27,145 U.S. students studying abroad, said Edrice Howard, IIE’s senior publications editor.
