Local News in Brief : Garden Grove : All Five Trustees Face Possible Recall Vote

Share

A group of parents angry over proposed school-boundary changes has served notice-to-recall papers on all five trustees of the Garden Grove Unified School District.

The recall move was prompted by a proposal that would move Latino students, who are now bused to three overcrowded schools in the eastern part of the school district, to three less-crowded, predominantly Anglo schools.

Some of the Anglo parents who served the papers at Tuesday night’s school board meeting said they were concerned that the enrollment of the Latino students would “slow down” the academic progress at the other schools because many of the Latinos may have difficulty with English.

Supt. Ed Dundon said the school board had not yet decided which students would attend the newly reopened Carrillo School on Bushard Avenue. He said a committee of staff members and parents was studying the problem. The committee’s report is due by the board’s second meeting in April.

After the intent-to-recall papers are filed with the county registrar of voters, the school board has seven days to formally respond. After that, recall advocates must publish their petition and then would have 160 days to gather the required number of signatures from registered voters to force a special recall election.
