An offer to resign by Viktor Tikhonov, coach of the victorious Soviet Olympic hockey team, has been rejected and he is planning to guide the team in the 1992 Winter Games.

A report that Tikhonov offered to resign because of pre-Olympic failures carried by Tass, the Soviet news agency, was apparently prompted by an article in the Sovetsky Sport newspaper that carried a single sentence, saying Tikhonov submitted his resignation because of criticism from the media.

“The manager’s lot is a very hard one, especially if everyone expects only wins from you,” Tikhonov said. “After several tournaments last year in which our team placed second, I came under very harsh, but not always justified, criticism from a group of sportswriters.”

Last season, the Soviet national team lost the world championship to Sweden and was beaten by the Canadians in the Canada Cup.
