In an effort to both protect the atmosphere and reduce litter, the Yosemite Park and Curry Co., chief concessionaire at Yosemite National Park, has decided to phase out all plastic foam containers. “Our action is a message to manufacturers of the threat posed to our planet by the process of making Styrofoam,” said Garrett DeBell, an environmental consultant to the Curry Co. He said the ban on foam containers in the park will help protect the environment from harmful chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that are used to produce the products. “It has been scientifically proven that CFCs destroy the earth’s ozone layer, which protects the planet from harmful ultraviolet radiation,” DeBell said. “CFCs also contribute to the ‘greenhouse effect’ that is raising the earth’s temperature.” DeBell said the park’s supply of containers will be depleted within six months.
