Local News in Brief : Countywide : Filing Period to Close Friday for School Board

Share

The county registrar’s office announced that the filing period closes Friday at 5 p.m. for four of the five seats on the County Board of Education that are up for election June 7.

The board supervises the Department of Education, which has an annual budget of about $50 million. The Department of Education operates schools for handicapped students and for juveniles in custody because of law violations. The department is also the fiscal agent and paymaster for the 29 local school districts in the county.

Normally, just three seats on the five-member county board would be up for election this year. But the death of board member Frances Murphy in February, 1987, makes an election necessary to fill the unexpired term of the fourth seat.

Sheila Meyers, president of the board, was appointed last year to fill Murphy’s seat pending the June election. The winner of that seat will serve until 1990. The three other seats on the ballot all carry four-year terms that expire in 1992.

To qualify as a candidate for the county school board, a candidate must be a registered voter and a resident of the trustee area of candidacy. The election is for seats from trustee areas 1, 2, 3 and 4.

For information about the area boundaries and filing for the election, call the registrar’s office at (714) 834-2244 and ask for the candidate filing section.
