Self-Esteem of Teen-Agers

I found Ronda Miller’s Commentary, “County Needs Self-Esteem Panel” (Feb. 21), timely. On the same day, an article appeared describing the conference entitled “Taking Charge.” As a participant and a sponsor of the conference planned by teens for teens, I believe that “Taking Charge” was a visible and effective process to increase the self-esteem of teens.

Through workshop-style sessions, information concerning sexuality, eating disorders, suicide and drug and alcohol abuse was presented in a factual, non-threatening manner. Time allowed participation and questions from the audience.

Many organizations within Orange County have been working with teens for many years. To my knowledge, “Taking Charge” was the first conference in which teens chose the topics, the speakers and the format of the day.

Planned Parenthood/Orange County believes that teens will make positive decisions about their lives if they are given accurate information and allowed to explore options. We believe in empowering teens to “Take Charge.”
