Wayne Gretzky had the numbers but refused to take the bows.

Gretzky assisted on five straight goals, two by Craig Simpson, to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 6-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets Monday night at Winnipeg.

“We couldn’t have played any better than we did tonight,” said Gretzky, paired on a line with Simpson for the first time this season. “We played a great team game, a great effort.

“(Simpson’s) more of a power player. He drives a little bit more.”

The victory moved the Oilers to within one point of Smythe Division leading Calgary.

Goaltender Grant Fuhr also got into the act, collecting an assist and making 21 saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

Simpson scored his 48th and 49th goals of the season. Esa Tikkanen, Craig MacTavish, Mark Messier and Jari Kurri also scored for Edmonton, which had four goals in the second period.

“It was good feeling tonight,” Simpson said. “Gretz does so many things, you just have to make sure you can get in the open for him.”

Pittsburgh 5, Calgary 4--Dan Quinn scored three goals against his former teammates, and the Penguins snapped the Flames’ six-game unbeaten streak at Calgary.

The victory lifted the Penguins over the New York Rangers and out of the Patrick Division cellar.

Quinn scored a goal in each period, extending the Penguins’ unbeaten streak at the Olympic Saddledome to four games. Quinn was traded to Pittsburgh in November of 1986 in the deal that sent center Mike Bullard, who had his 41st goal in the game, to the Flames.

Mario Lemieux scored his 57th goal of the season, and Paul Coffey scored 86 seconds into the game as Pittsburgh built a 5-2 lead before holding off the Flames, who got goals from Gary Suter and Colin Patterson in the final 10 minutes.
