Broadway producer Joseph Papp has taken a liking to Florida State University and will open a musical there this summer. “I have adopted this university,” Papp, wearing a red and gold cap bearing the FSU logo, said at a news conference Monday in Tallahassee. “I have enough hats to prove it.” The play is “Betsey Brown,” a musical adapted by Ntozake Shange and Emily Mann from Shange’s critically acclaimed book. It will feature actors and designers from New York with musicians and supporting cast members hired locally. “If this works out well, we’ll do some other things (at FSU),” Papp said. “I have them (other projects) waiting in the wings.”
