Television commentator Bill Press, facing certain defeat, quit the Senate Democratic primary race today and endorsed his rival, Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy, in the battle to unseat Republican Pete Wilson.

“From the beginning of this campaign . . . my principal goal has been, and remains, to retire Pete Wilson from the U.S. Senate,” Press told a news conference. “Pete Wilson is a man who does not represent a majority of Californians. Pete Wilson has to go. And, if I’m not the one to do it, then I am happy it is Leo McCarthy.”
