NHL Roundup : Canadiens Beat Oilers at Edmonton for Ninth Straight

Shane Corson and Mike McPhee each had a goal and an assist as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Edmonton Oilers, 4-1, Wednesday night at Edmonton for their ninth straight victory.

The Canadiens strengthened their position as first overall in the league standings and moved seven points ahead of the second-place Boston Bruins in the Adams Division.

The Oilers also missed a chance to tie the Calgary Flames for the Smythe Division lead.

The Canadiens have 88 points, followed by the Flames with 86 and the Oilers with 84.

Esa Tikkanen scored for the Oilers.

Winnipeg 6, Calgary 6--Paul MacLean scored four goals, three on power plays, and defenseman Randy Carlyle added four assists and a power-play goal as the Jets skated to a 6-6 tie with the Flames at Winnipeg.

The Jets took a 6-4 lead with 7:15 gone in the third period, but Al MacInnis scored at 8:42 and Hakan Loob tied the game at 12:53.

Winnipeg scored five times in eight power-play opportunities. They have 101 power-play goals for the season, breaking the NHL record of 99 set by the 1981-82 Pittsburgh Penguins and matched by the 1985-86 Quebec Nordiques.

Chicago 4, Toronto 3--Defenseman Keith Brown scored his second goal of the game with 1:12 left to lift the Blackhawks to victory at Chicago.

Brown, who had not scored since last Oct. 10, scored twice in the final period, including a 55-foot slapshot for the winning goal.

The victory enabled the Blackhawks to move within three points of second-place St. Louis in the Norris Division. The defeat was the sixth in a row for the Maple Leafs and their fifth straight by Chicago.

Buffalo 6, Minnesota 2--Phil Housley celebrated his 24th birthday at Bloomington, Minn., with his 28th and 29th goals of the season, and the Sabres handed the North Stars their seventh straight defeat.

The North Stars’ losing streak is three games short of the club record set in 1975-76. Minnesota has won only 1 of its last 15 games and is in last place in the Norris Division, five points behind Toronto in their battle for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Dave Andreychuk had a goal and three assists for Buffalo, which has won six of its last seven.
