*** 1/2 “Stake-Out.” Disney. $89.95 . Released Tuesday.

Richard Dreyfuss is back--and brighter than ever. In “Stake-Out,” one of his three 1987 films (the others were “Tin Men” and “Nuts”), Dreyfuss plays a cop who falls in love with the woman he and partner Emilio Estevez are watching. If anything, “Stake-Out” plays even better on home video than it did in theaters, where it cleaned up. The script is nothing special and the tacked-on ending brings the movie down in movie theaters. But Dreyfuss and Estevez were allowed to elaborate on the banter that made their relationship special, and as competition for what passes as cops-and-robbers entertainment on TV these days, this makes near-perfect home viewing.
