A radio station’s live broadcast from a Hayward, Calif., shopping center drew thousands of teen-agers, resulting in fist fights and five arrests Wednesday night, police said. An estimated 3,000 youths converged on the Southland Shopping Mall to hear KMEL-FM announce the winner of its $20,000 scavenger hunt--Verna Kechriotis, 27. Stores closed early as shoppers left, unable to cope with the massive crowd. Hayward police had trouble coping too, and brought in California Highway Patrol and sheriff’s units to assist. Hayward resident Kechriotis said the hardest item to find during the hunt was an 8-track tape of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “That’s the Way of the World.”
