Local News in Brief : Water Plan Opposed

Share

Assemblywoman Sally Tanner (D-El Monte) is trying to get legislators and congressmen representing the San Gabriel Valley to unite in opposing any plan that would force residents to pay for cleaning up polluted ground water.

Tanner said officials of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have informed her that they are considering asking water utilities to pay for systems to treat polluted water, instead of using Superfund money for the work. The cost would be passed on to water users in the form of higher bills.

EPA officials disclosed last month that it will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to remove chlorinated solvents that have contaminated the main San Gabriel water basin and said the project may require more money than will be available through Superfund programs.
