Local News in Brief : New Air Routes Open
Three air routes have been officially opened for general aviation pilots who complained when a path across controlled airspace near Los Angeles International Airport was closed for safety reasons last year.
One of the new corridors crosses directly over the airport, while the others are east and west of it. They replace the old Visual Flight Rule Corridor (VFR) that the Federal Aviation Administration closed last Aug. 19 in an emergency action prompted by a high number of near collisions between air carriers and light aircraft.
The FAA has held several education meetings for pilots on the changes in the airport’s Terminal Control Area since the new routes were announced Feb. 8.
Pilots using the new Special Flight Rules Area over LAX must have a chart of the TCA in their cockpit, and must have anti-collision and position lights turned on. Traffic also is restricted to non-turbojet aircraft operating at no more than 140 nautical m.p.h.
