Local News in Brief : Amnesty Ad Campaign

Share

Criticizing the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service’s publicizing of the amnesty program for illegal aliens, a group of labor leaders has announced an advertising campaign of their own for the final weeks of the program.

“The INS campaign for amnesty has been inadequate,” said Fernando Tafoya, executive director of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor’s Immigrant Assistance Project. “Most of their ads have been in English and the information they give out is too basic for many immigrants’ needs.”

Tafoya said that the local AFL-CIO is sponsoring an advertising drive in the final eight weeks of the program, including television, radio and newspaper spots. The project also offers free initial consultations for those who believe they may be eligible for amnesty.

“The public needs to know that any talk about an extension is sheer speculation at this point and they should get their applications in as soon as possible,” Tafoya said.
