Prudential-Bache Securities Inc. lost $164 million in 1987, more than previously estimated.

Prudential Insurance Co. of America, the securities firm’s parent, said Monday that its own profit from operations, before dividends and federal income tax, rose to $2.65 billion from $2.55 billion. Prudential did not announce a net income figure.

Prudential, the nation’s largest insurer, did not detail the reasons for the loss at Prudential-Bache except to say it included a charge of $47 million from the closing of an international trade unit.

Prudential-Bache told its employees in January that it had taken an unspecified charge related to litigation involving the alleged attempt by the Hunt brothers of Texas to corner the silver market in early 1980.
