A former Army sergeant who as a supervisor of a junior ROTC program allegedly provided marijuana and methamphetamine to his students pleaded innocent to the charges Thursday.

Robert Deering, 27, who was serving as an at the Army-Navy Academy in Carlsbad as a supervisor for its Junior ROTC program, pleaded innocent to five felony counts of furnishing the drugs to some of his students.

Vista Municipal Judge Luther Leeger set an April 8 preliminary hearing date for Deering, who is free on bail.

Deering, an Oceanside resident, is accused of providing the drugs to students while entertaining them after school hours at his home. The private school suspended Deering and six students in connection with the alleged incidents, and Deering was later discharged from the Army.
