A San Diego police SWAT team member was knocked unconscious Thursday night when a heavy metal door of a home being searched for narcotics swung wildly while being pulled open.

The officer, Louis Colon, 34, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was first listed in serious condition. Several hours later, he was awake and his condition was upgraded to stable. Colon suffered a broken clavicle and a chipped vertebra, according to a police spokesman.

The mishap occurred at 6:10 p.m. in the 200 block of South Bancroft Street when Colon and his SWAT team colleagues were helping members of the narcotics task force serve a search warrant on a home suspected of containing drugs. The front entrance to the house was locked by a heavy metal security door, police said.

Colon was standing to the side when officers yanked the door open and it unexpectedly swung wildly, hitting Colon in the back of the head.

No other injuries were reported, police said.
