Weekend to Be a Preview of Summer

The pleasant, early spring-like weather of recent days appears to be building toward a preview of summer this weekend.

Afternoon temperatures ranged from the high 60s to the mid-70s over much of Southern California on Thursday. And forecasters predicted clear skies, even warmer temperatures and gentle winds in most areas for today and Saturday, at least.

“It’s going to be real great weather to be outdoors,” said Dan Bowman of Weatherdata Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times. “It’ll be warmer than normal, with no strong winds. Afternoon highs in the (Los Angeles) Basin should hit the mid-80s.”

Slightly Cooler Sunday

Sunday should bring more of the same, with slightly cooler temperatures, Bowman said.

“A cold front may move onto the coast of Northern California early next week, with some showers, but it will probably be too weak to affect Southern California except for gradually cooling temperatures,” Bowman said.

But the good news for sunbathers and picnickers was bad news for air quality.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District forecast slightly worse smog, predicting that it will reach “unhealthful” levels in the Pomona and San Gabriel valleys.

75 at Civic Center

The temperature reached 75 at the Civic Center on Thursday, 79 in Long Beach, 72 in Santa Ana, 65 in San Diego and 68 in Santa Barbara.

Winds that gusted to 30 m.p.h. in some areas, especially below the canyons, were expected to taper off today.

The National Weather Service predicted clear skies and temperatures in the high 60s to mid-70s at beaches from Santa Barbara to San Diego.

Resort, Desert Forecasts

High temperatures from 54 to 62 were predicted for Southern California mountain resort areas, and nighttime lows of 25 to 35. High temperatures in the upper 70s were expected in most desert areas, ranging up to 85 in Death Valley, with nightly lows down to 34.

San Francisco expected cooler weather, with a predicted high of 71 under sunny skies, except for some patchy fog in the early morning and evenings.
