Red Defects, Tells of Spy
An East German official with detailed knowledge of East Bloc espionage routes in West Germany has defected, leading to the arrest of a suspected spy in a Bonn ministry, security sources said today.
The sources said Ulrich Fuchs, deputy head of the East German state transport company Deutrans, defected while on a business trip in West Germany early this month. Later today, security sources said a woman secretary in the Overseas Development Ministry had been arrested on suspicion of espionage based on statements given by Fuchs to the West German foreign intelligence service. The unmarried secretary in her 40s was reportedly recruited in 1975 by an East German agent who had an affair with her.
