The federal government announced today that it will give illegal aliens who file applications in the last month of the amnesty program 60 additional days to submit documentation to support their applications.

The move is designed to counter criticism from Congress over the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service’s refusal to extend the May 4 deadline for submitting applications.

At a news conference, Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III said the 60-day extension on submitting supporting information will give all eligible aliens ample opportunity to take advantage of the chance to become legal U.S. residents. It would apply to applications submitted between April 4 and May 4.

Application Deadline Stands

“It is our hope that on May 4 every single person who is eligible for legalization will have applied,” Meese told reporters at an immigration office in Arlington, Va.

But under the simplified filing policy announced by Meese and Immigration Commissioner Alan Nelson, applicants will not be required to produce time-consuming supporting documentation or medical information for at least 60 days.

Nelson said that applicants would be scheduled for an interview after July 5 and that at that time documentation would be required.
