Engineers, architects and artists will be among the 35,000 people expected to attend the National Computer Graphics Assn. conference and exhibition, which begins a five-day run Sunday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Anaheim is hosting the trade show for the fourth time in nine years. The show was last held in Anaheim in 1986.

“This (Southern California) is one of the most fertile areas in the country for computer graphics,” said Bob Cramblitt, a spokesman for the Virginia-based trade group that sponsors the show. “The interest here is just tremendous. There’s a big high-tech community here and lots of companies using computer graphics.”

One industry development expected to generate some excitement at next week’s show will involve Apple Computer’s Macintosh II machine and its ability to generate color graphics images.

“We’re really going to see an explosion of products piggybacking onto the Macintosh,” Cramblitt said. “The bringing of color to the Macintosh has been a big boon to the computer graphics industry.”

Although the show emphasizes computer graphics for the business community, there has been increasing interest in its use in the arts, particularly in film and video production. The conference will include dozens of seminars on topics ranging from computer graphics in the aerospace industry to desktop publishing, to computer animation.

Tuesday, winners of the 1988 International Computer Animation Competition will have their works shown at a dinner and awards ceremony at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel.

The products of more than 260 companies will be on display when the exhibition opens at 10 a.m. Monday. Exhibition hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday. A one-day admission to the exhibition can be purchased on site for $30.
