Palos Verdes High School placed sixth among 47 schools competing in the California Academic Decathlon state finals in Sacramento, judges announced last week. The Peninsula team also won five individual medals.

The top winners in the March 12 contest were Taft High School of Woodland Hills, Roosevelt High of Fresno and Torrey Pines of San Diego County. Taft will go to the national finals April 30 in San Antonio, Tex.

The Palos Verdes scholars--six regular team members and three alternates coached by English teacher Yuki Kuno--qualified for the state competition last November by besting Beverly Hills High in the county decathlon.
