Roundup : No. 12 Ole Miss Struggles to Beat Houston, 74-68

Phyllis Stafford’s jumper with 1:13 left put No. 12-ranked Mississippi ahead for good and the Lady Rebels pulled out a 74-68 victory over Houston Saturday night in an NCAA Midwest Regional women’s game at Oxford, Miss.

Kim Bullard hit four free throws and Cynthia Autry, who scored 29 points, added one to clinch the victory for Ole Miss (24-6).

Kelly McCabe scored 14 points for Houston (22-7).

Tennessee 94, Wake Forest 66--Bridgette Gordon scored 28 points and Lisa Webb added 24 points and 12 rebounds as the top-ranked Lady Volunteers trounced the Demon Deacons in the East Regional at Knoxville, Tenn.

It was the 20th straight victory for Tennessee (29-2).

Lisa Dodd had 15 points for Wake Forest (23-8).

Louisiana Tech 89, Kansas 50--Angela Lawson scored 17 points and Erica Westbrooks added 16 as the fifth-ranked Lady Techsters routed the Jayhawks at Ruston, La., in the Mideast Regional.

Venus Lacy added 15 points and 9 rebounds for Tech (28-2).

Lisa Baker scored 12 points for Kansas (22-9).

Maryland 78, St. Joseph’s 67--Edna Campbell made 9 of 12 shots and scored 19 points as the ninth-ranked Terrapins downed the Lady Hawks at College Park, Md., in the Mideast Regional.

St. Joseph’s (24-8) whittled a 10-point deficit down to 56-50 with 7:34 left, but Maryland (25-5) pulled away on baskets by Christy Winters and Vicky Bullett and Carla Holmes’ three-pointer.

Dale Hodges scored 20 points for the Lady Hawks.

Washington 99, New Mexico State 74--Freshman center Karen Deden with 25 points and Yvette Cole added 23 as the 11th-ranked Huskies got past the No. 18 Aggies in a West Regional game at Seattle.

New Mexico State (26-3) was within 64-59 with 10 minutes left, but Washington (25-4) broke the game open with a 16-2 run in the next 4 1/2 minutes.

Jill Spaschak had 23 points for the Aggies.

Rutgers 88, Old Dominion 78--Missy Lender scored 24 points and Sue Wicks added 22 to help the No. 8 Lady Knights hold off the Lady Monarchs at Piscataway, N.J., in the East Regional.

Rutgers (27-4) scored the first 13 points and rolled to a 44-18 lead in winning its 48th straight home game.

Donna Harrington scored 20 points for Old Dominion (17-12).

Virginia 85, St. John’s 64--Donna Holt scored 21 points and Laurie Carter came off the bench to add 18 as the No. 10 Cavaliers turned back the Express in the East Regional at Charlottesville, Va.

Holt made all 5 of her three-pointers and added 7 rebounds and 4 assists for Virginia (26-4).

Lisa Smith scored 20 points for St. John’s (22-10).

Georgia 84, Western Kentucky 66--Sherelle Warren collected 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 17 Lady Bulldogs past the Hilltoppers in a Mideast Regional game at Athens, Ga.

The Lady Bulldogs (21-9) held Western Kentucky (26-8), which had five turnovers in its first seven possessions, without a point for the first four minutes and rolled to a 48-33 halftime lead.

Tandreia Green scored 19 points for the Hilltoppers

James Madison 70, Clemson 63--Alisa Harris scored 29 points and the No. 14 Dukes beat the Tigers in an East Regional game at Harrisonburg, Va.

The Dukes (27-3) won their 25th straight game at home.

Louise Greenwood had 22 points for Clemson (21-9).
