Robertson Wins Cheers in Orange County Talk

In a speech loudly applauded Sunday by a predominantly Latino audience in Santa Ana, presidential hopeful Pat Robertson said U.S. troops are in Honduras because Congress refused to vote more aid to the Nicaraguan Contras.

Robertson told about 1,800 people attending religious services at Templo Calvario, an Assembly of God church, that Congress’ recent refusal to approve aid for the Contras fighting from Honduran bases had emboldened Nicaragua’s Sandinista government to invade the neighboring country.

Robertson made a swing into Orange County after several weekend appearances in Northern California. During a brief news conference, Robertson said he thinks he has a chance to win this state’s 175 delegates to the Republican National Convention in the June 7 primary. That, he said, would enable him to have a voice in setting the party’s presidential platform.
