Egypt’s Parliament approved a 3-year extension of emergency laws passed in 1981 after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat by Muslim fundamentalists. The government said the laws are still needed to combat terrorist threats. The Middle East News Agency said the extension will be in force from May 1, 1988, to May 31, 1991. The emergency laws ban demonstrations, unauthorized assembly and strikes and give the government wide powers of search without warrant and detention of people regarded as security risks.
