Local News in Brief : John Wayne Airport : Westmoreland, Wife Welcomed to County

Retired Army Chief of Staff Gen. William C. Westmoreland stopped over briefly in Orange County Monday en route to Palm Springs, where he will spend a few days as a house guest of Bob Hope before turning around and coming back here later in the week.

Westmoreland, commander of U.S. military forces in Vietnam from 1964-68 and chief of staff from 1968-72, was met at John Wayne Airport by the Santa Ana High School band and the school’s Naval Junior ROTC drill team. Also on hand were Mary Bonino Jones, Orange County chief of protocol, and a representative of the Orange County Republican Party.

Westmoreland and his wife, Kitsy, will be back in the county Friday and Saturday for visits to two high schools, Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana, Little Saigon, as well as for meetings with Republican Party representatives and city leaders in Anaheim, Orange and Costa Mesa.

A banquet will be held in his honor Saturday to celebrate his 74th birthday.
