--Hank Williams Jr. won his second consecutive Entertainer of the Year trophy and Randy Travis won awards for male singer, single and song of the year at the 23rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park. “Forever and Ever, Amen” brought Travis the song and single honors, the same categories that he won last year with “On The Other Hand.” Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt were honored in the nationally televised show for “Trio,” named album of the year. Reba McEntire was top female vocalist, and the Judds took the duet award.

--White House Chief of Staff Howard H. Baker Jr. had a close encounter with a burglar who got away with some camera equipment and Baker’s Medal of Freedom, a White House spokesman disclosed. Marlin Fitzwater said Baker and his wife, Joy, came home to find their basement door open and surprised a burglar Saturday. Fitzwater said Baker chased the burglar up the stairs of his northwest Washington home but he got away through a back door. A suspect was arrested and most of Baker’s camera equipment was recovered, but not the medal. At a senior staff luncheon, President Reagan presented Baker with a second Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award a President can bestow.

--Clint Eastwood fans showed their loyalty by offering to cover a $63 speeding ticket that dates back to 1977, a district justice said. Eastwood received the ticket for allegedly driving 69 m.p.h. in a 55-m.p.h. zone, said District Justice Marion Morgret of Everett, Pa. Eastwood never responded to notices and the ticket was placed in the “dead” file Feb. 29, 1980, she said. On March 13, the Pittsburgh Press profiled Everett and mentioned that the actor never paid up, Morgret said. But the justice has turned down offers to pay the fine because technically the star no longer owes it. The statute of limitations on the unpaid ticket expired years ago, Morgret said.
