The absence of name recognition was blamed for the cancellation of Laura Dean’s Saturday master class, a joint project by the foundation and the Dancer’s Workshop of San Diego.

“I just didn’t feel people knew the name, and we didn’t get enough people to sign up in advance,” said Wendy Ellen Cochran, coordinator of the project. “We can’t take a chance spending $300 to $700 a shot (for the artists), unless we know we’re going to have sufficient students.”

Other workshop performances, held in conjunction with the dance series, have been very successful, and Cochran said she has no intention of discontinuing the workshop project.

“We are definitely going ahead with Nikolais and National Ballet of Canada (in May). It’s just a shame people missed out on Laura Dean. She was going to teach this workshop herself, and this would have been the first time we had the company star to teach a workshop.”
