Gotch, 3 Others Get Seats on Stadium Board

Four people, including former San Diego City Councilman Mike Gotch, were appointed Tuesday to the San Diego Stadium Authority Governing Board. Six people vied for the four vacancies, which were filled by a City Council vote.

Despite earlier assurances that he would attend the hearing to argue for his appointment, Gotch failed to appear before the council.

Two speakers asked the council to reject Gotch’s nomination, which was publicly endorsed by several council members. Fred Thompson, who said he is a Mission Beach resident, blamed Gotch for allowing Belmont Park to be turned into a shopping center.

“It was supposed to be a park . . . He’ll turn the parking lot at the stadium into another shopping center,” said Thompson.

Attorney Beatrice Kemp also was appointed to the board, and John Carlson and Oscar Padilla were reappointed.

Each appointee serves a four-year term.
