There were 259 AIDS deaths and 278 new cases reported in California in February, the state Department of Health Services said. Those figures brought the state’s cumulative totals since 1981, when the first acquired immune deficiency syndrome cases were tallied, to 11,994 cases resulting so far in 6,647 deaths. The report said through Feb. 29, Los Angeles County has had 4,437 AIDS cases resulting in 2,768 deaths, and San Francisco has had 3,813 cases resulting in 1,897 deaths. The state report said the number of new cases was up 2.4% over January and that the largest rate of increase, 6%, was among adult and adolescent women.
