President Francois Mitterrand said Tuesday he will seek a second term, ending months of speculation on whether the 71-year-old Socialist would enter the presidential race.

Appearing on a nationwide evening newscast, Mitterrand was asked if he would run. He paused dramatically, clearly savoring the moment, before delivering a one-word answer, “Oui.”

Mitterrand said he decided to seek a second 7-year term because he thinks disunity threatens “to tear the social fabric” of the nation.
