A Sepulveda man was critically injured by a shotgun blast fired by a police officer during a struggle for control of another officer’s gun, authorities said Thursday.
Jaimie Cardona, 25, was shot during the scuffle outside his apartment in the 8700 block of Parthenia Place at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said. He was in critical but stable condition at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills.
Police said the shooting took place after two officers were called to the corner of Columbus Avenue and Parthenia Place in Sepulveda after a passer-by called to report a man with a gun.
When officers Peggy Moseley, 32, and Jayme Weaver, 25, arrived, the caller said a man sitting in a car was the gunman. Police said that, when the officers attempted to talk to the man, he drove away and did not stop until he pulled into the apartment parking lot.
The officers then got out of their car, took positions behind the open car doors and ordered the driver out of the other car with his hands up. Police said Cardona got out of the car but ignored officers’ orders to raise his hands and stand still. Police said he walked up to Weaver, grabbed the end of her gun, and a struggle ensued.
Police said Moseley, who was armed with a shotgun, moved around the patrol car and fired one shot at Cardona, hitting him in the side.
Police found a loaded shotgun inside Cardona’s car, authorities said. An investigation of the shooting was continuing. Police said Cardona was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
