Millo and Zajic to Solo During 10th Season of Symphony

Soprano Aprile Millo and mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajic will be soloists in Verdi’s Requiem conducted by Keith Clark as part of the Pacific Symphony’s 10th anniversary season.

Programs, except for a summer series, will be at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.

Clark, who in his final season as music director of the orchestra he founded in 1979, will lead six of the nine programs on the classical music series.

Guest conductors, possible successors to Clark, will lead the remaining events. They will be named later.

Dates and programs for the 1988-89 series are as follows (all concerts are at 8 p.m., with concert previews at 7 p.m.):

--Oct. 12, 13: Clark, conductor; Misha Dichter, piano: Mozart’s Concerto No. 23; Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7; premiere of work commissioned for the 10th anniversary of Pacific Symphony, composer to be announced.

--Nov. 1, 3: Guest conductor to be announced; Louise DiTullio, piccolo; Elmar Oliveira, violin: Vivaldi’s Piccolo Concerto in C, Walton’s Violin Concerto; Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2.

--Nov. 22, 23: Clark; Klara Barlow, soprano; Jerome Hines, bass: Wagner program, including scenes from “Die Walkure.”

--Dec. 14, 15: Guest conductor TBA; Bella Davidovich, piano: Chopin’s Concerto No. 1, Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra.

--Feb. 1, 2, 1989: Clark; Horacio Gutierrez, piano: Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony; Joseph Schwanter’s “New Morning for the World” (texts by Martin Luther King Jr.), Brahm’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

--March 1, 2: Guest conductor TBA; Viktoria Mullova, violin: Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.

--April 5, 6: Clark; Leila Josefowicz, violin: Suite from Stravinsky’s “Petrouchka,” Ravel’s “Tzigane,” Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra.”

--April 26, 27: Clark; Millo, soprano; Zajic, mezzo-soprano; tenor and bass soloists TBA: Verdi’s Requiem.

--May 10, 11: Clark, Lynn Harrell, cello: Suite from Copland’s “Appalachian Spring,” Joan Tower’s Cello Concerto, Tchaikovsky’s “Variations on a Rococo Theme,” Schumann’s “Spring” Symphony.

Other events will include:

--Oct. 2, 10th anniversary benefit concert. Program to be announced.

--Dec. 17: Handel’s “Messiah.”

--Dec. 31: New Year’s Eve concert.

--May 13: Multimedia concert (sponsored by Chevron USA).

A pops series conducted by Doc Severinsen is scheduled at the Center on the following dates:

--Dec. 16, 17: Vocalist Mel Torme.

--Feb. 3, 4, 1989: Vocalist Sarah Vaughan.

--March 16, 17: Vocalist Johnny Mathis.

--April 7, 9 and May 19, 20: Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band.

--June 9, 10: Composer-pianist Marvin Hamlisch.

Also, a summer series will be given at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre:

--July 4, 1988: Morton Gould, conductor: Music of Copland, Ives, Gershwin, others; fireworks.

--July 16: Clark, soloist TBA: Grieg’s Piano Concerto, Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony.

--Aug. 6: Clark, soloists and chorus to be announced: Beethoven’s “Choral” Symphony.

--Aug. 27: Guest conductor TBA: Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor; other works TBA.

--Sept. 10: Clark: Tchaikovsky program, including “1812” Overture; fireworks.
